Looking over some important facts about Jamaica is essential to the understanding and learning of the wondrous little island in the Caribbean called Jamaica. And what a great Country Jamaica is, from its rich culture to its delicious food, all the way to its beautiful beaches.

- Jamaica has won the most world medals and Olympic medals on the planet, aside from the United States. Probably due in part to the warm tropical climate which gives athletes ample time to train for their goals year-round!
- Jamaica has over 120 lakes and rivers and is known as the “Little Jewel in the Caribbean”.
- Real Jamaican jerk flavor comes from meat seasoned with pimento spice then the meat is placed on top of a bed of pimento leaves, and pimento wood sticks (Pimento is the wood of the Jamaican allspice tree and is found only in Jamaica) then the meat is slowly barbecued over an open fire.
- Jamaica has 26 birds that can be found nowhere else in the world and over 250 bird species on the island, a great place to bird watch.
- Most Jamaican’s speak to each other in Patois, a language made up of English and African Creole, even though the official language is English.
- Jamaica has the most churches per square mile than any other country in the world.
- Jamaica measures 146 miles at its widest point, and is the third largest island in the Caribbean.
- Jamaica has a mountain named “Blue Mountain” which measures at 7,402 feet high.
- The climate of Jamaica year-round is summer and their is no definite rainy season.
- Arawak Indians were the original inhabitants or Jamaica before the Spanish killed them off in 1492.

Tourism is one of the main sources of income for Jamaica, which welcomes as many as three million tourists each year. This means it is easy to find places to stay. There are many interesting Jamaica facts that are good to know if you plan to visit this island nation.
- Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, with a total land area measuring 4,244 square miles. The interior is mainly mountainous, so most of the cities are located on the coast.
- The name Jamaica comes from the Arawak word Xaymaca, meaning “land of many springs” or “land of wood and water.”
- Jamaica was originally populated by a native population of Arawak Indians. It was colonized by Spain and then taken over by the British. Much of the population is now descended from African slaves, but there are people of all races living in Jamaica now. This mixture of cultures and races is the origin of the national motto “Out of Many One People.”
- Another of the interesting Jamaica facts is that Jamaica is part of the British Commonwealth, so the Queen of England is the figurative head of Jamaica, although Jamaica is politically independent and led by its Prime Minister.
- Jamaica was the second country in the Caribbean to elect a female head of state, with the election of a female Prime Minister in 2006, something the United States has yet to do.
- Although English is the official language of Jamaica, many of the people speak a dialect they call Jamaican Patois, which is a mix of English words and words that come from other languages.
- Jerk chicken, salt fish, which is salted cod fish, and Ackee are popular Jamaican national dishes. If you open ackee fruits when they are not yet ready they are poisonous. They are often eaten with bammies, a food made from cassava, which is also potentially poisonous if not prepared properly.
- Jamaica is the home of Bob Marley, reggae music, ska, rock steady and dance hall music. These forms of music have influenced many other types of music as well.
- The black in the Jamaican flag represents the hardship of the people, the gold represents the sunshine and the green represents the lush green of the country. The Jamaican flag is one of only two in the world that does not contain any of the colors of the U.S. flag.
- One of the less positive Jamaica facts is that Jamaica has one of the highest rates of murder in the world, especially around Kingston and the other large cities.
